Aching legs, throbbing pain, and bulging, rope-like veins that make you hide behind long pants in the middle of summer—living with varicose veins can drain your comfort and your confidence. More than 30 million Americans suffer from venous insufficiency, yet fewer than 10% ever seek treatment for a condition that, left alone, can progress to skin damage and painful ulcers.
Endovenous thermal ablation (EVTA) offers a minimally invasive, walk-in/walk-out solution that targets the root cause of varicose veins, relieves uncomfortable symptoms, and restores the look and function of your legs—often in less than an hour.
Tennessee Vein Center offers this treatment to patients in Alcoa, Knoxville, and the surrounding East Tennessee communities. The practice has been exclusively dedicated to treating varicose and spider veins since 2003 and is led by Dr. Keith Campbell, dual board-certified in Phlebology and Family Medicine. As a nationally accredited vein treatment center, our team delivers proven results with the most advanced techniques available today.

What is Endovenous Thermal Ablation Treatment?
Endovenous thermal ablation is a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided treatment for varicose veins that uses either laser or radiofrequency energy.
The goal of EVTA is to treat underlying abnormal veins with broken valves.
This in-office treatment is performed under local anesthesia and can rapidly improve varicose veins or symptoms of venous insufficiency.
The energy used during the procedure is delivered through a fine optical fiber inserted into the underlying abnormal vein. It heats the vein at the optical fiber’s tip, causing the abnormal vein to close. Blood is rerouted to the normal functioning veins. Over time, the abnormal vein treated with thermal energy breaks down and is reabsorbed by the body.
The procedure takes less than one hour, and you can walk out and resume most of your normal daily activities.

Who is a Candidate for Endovenous Thermal Ablation?
Endovenous thermal ablation is a suitable treatment for vein disease for men and women of any skin tone diagnosed with varicose veins.
The procedure may be ideal for you if you have:
-
A confirmed venous insufficiency diagnosis with moderate to severe symptoms.
-
Symptomatic varicose veins, including pain, swelling, or discomfort.
-
Tried other conservative treatments like compression stockings without success
-
Ability to easily walk
Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised not to consider endovenous ablation.
During your initial consultation with our skilled team, we will assess your condition and health to ensure that endovenous thermal ablation treatment is appropriate for your health needs and wellness goals.
How Is an EVTA Procedure Performed?
The process begins with a consultation at Tennessee Vein Center. During this visit, the team will review your symptoms and determine whether duplex venous ultrasound, also known as vein mapping, is needed to evaluate blood flow and confirm whether EVTA is appropriate.

During the procedure:
-
You will lie on an examination table while the treatment area is cleaned and sterilized.
-
Local anesthesia will be administered to help keep you comfortable.
-
Ultrasound guidance will be used to locate the affected vein accurately.
-
A thin catheter will be inserted through a small opening, usually near the knee or ankle.
-
A tumescent solution may be used to numb and protect the surrounding tissue.
-
A laser fiber or radiofrequency catheter will deliver thermal energy, causing the abnormal vein to close.
-
Bandages and compression stockings will be applied afterward to help control swelling.

Bandages and compression stockings will be applied afterward to help control swelling.
Most patients are encouraged to walk and return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment.
Preparing for Your EVTA Appointment
On the day of the procedure:
-
Avoid applying lotion to your legs.
-
Wear or bring loose-fitting shorts. Disposable shorts can be provided if needed.
-
Bring your medical-grade thigh-high compression stockings.
-
Eat normally, but avoid a heavy meal immediately before treatment. A light snack may be helpful if several hours have passed since you last ate.
Insurance providers may also require documentation showing that conservative treatments, such as compression stockings, were tried before approving the procedure.
What to Expect After Endovenous Ablation
Immediately after an EVTA procedure, you will be asked to put on your compression stockings and walk or cycle for 10 minutes.
You need to wear your medical-grade compression hose for up to 7 days after the procedure, or until your follow-up ultrasound is performed. Compression hose helps improve circulation, reduce swelling and inflammation, and speed the healing process.
Bruising, minor soreness, and a feeling of tightness are typical side effects and will pass on their own. If needed, an over-the-counter pain reliever can relieve the mild discomfort.
A follow-up ultrasound will be scheduled and needs to be performed between 3 and 7 days after the procedure.
Extremely strenuous activities should be avoided for a few days after the procedure.
Thermal energy targets the source of varicose veins and reduces pressure on visible varicose veins, making sclerotherapy treatment much more effective. Most patients will require sclerotherapy treatments after their endovenous ablation procedure is fully healed to address the problem comprehensively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Closing an unhealthy superficial vein does not prevent blood from returning to the heart. Once the vein is sealed, blood naturally redirects through nearby healthy veins that are better able to support normal circulation.
Both treatments use controlled heat to close a vein with damaged valves. Laser ablation delivers energy through a thin laser fiber, while radiofrequency ablation uses a specialized catheter. The recommended method will depend on the affected vein, your anatomy, and the findings from your ultrasound evaluation.
Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area and keep discomfort to a minimum. You may notice pressure or pulling during the procedure, followed by temporary soreness, bruising, or tightness as the vein heals.
The treated vein should remain closed, but other veins may develop valve problems over time. Follow-up care and treatment of remaining surface veins can help address persistent or newly developing varicose veins.
Contact the office if you experience increasing pain, significant swelling, spreading redness, fever, or drainage from the treatment site. Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood requires immediate medical attention.
